Anglicans Reading Together

(Or find a paper copy in the church office or narthex.)

This Bible Reading Plan is a shortened version of the Daily Office Lectionary found in the Book of Common Prayer 2019. Here are the goals of this plan:

  • Short Enough: The Daily Office lectionary includes 4 lessons and 2 portions of Psalms for each day. Unless you live in a monastery, that’s a lot of reading! This Reading Plan consists usually of just one lesson per day.

  • Together: By doing the same Reading Plan, participants can easily discuss in casual conversation the things they are reading—the questions they have, how they have been challenged, the ways they have been encouraged, etc. And by selecting our readings from the BCP (2019) Daily Office Lectionary, we are reading along with Anglicans throughout the ACNA.

  • Related to Worship: If you come to a Morning or Evening Prayer service, you might well find yourself reading your lesson for the day in the Reading Plan. And where possible, the Reading Plan features books that will be read in Sunday Eucharist too. For example, Mark is the gospel we read the most of in Sunday worship during Year B, so in Year B, we would read Mark as part of our Reading Plan.

One last note on selection. Most books we will read as a whole (e.g., Romans), but some we might split up (e.g., Isaiah). Sometimes two books could overlap such that there are 2 lessons to read on the same day for a few days. Sometimes there will be gaps between one book ending and another book starting, so we’ll fill those days in with Psalms. Old Testament lessons are typically one whole chapter, whereas New Testament lessons (esp. Gospels) are often less than one chapter.
